Handloom refers to a loom that is used to weave cloth without the use of any electricity. Handloom weaving is done on pit looms or frame looms generally located in weavers’ homes. The handloom sector plays a vital role in the economy of India, and it is the second largest economic activity after agriculture, involving nearly 30 lakh weavers. The handloom industry belongs to the pre-independence period, and the new economic policy in India is implemented to thrust this industry. The handloom weaving process requires several stages to produce the final product, and traditionally, the processes of dyeing, warping, sizing, attaching the warp, weft winding, and weaving were done by weavers and local specialists around weaving villages. The handloom saris are made from silk or cotton threads. The weavers hand is at the heart of this intricate process, and they select the yarn, pattern, color, texture, and precise technique to create their desired aesthetic. The fabric carries the energy and personality of the weaver, and it becomes part of the garments story. Handloom production is decentralized in nature and mostly carried out in the village, and the loom is located in the weavers home, and the weaving is carried out from his home. The handloom sector provides employment to 4.33 million people. Handloom and Khadi are like cousins, and the handloom weaver is common to both Khadi and Handloom.
