Homozygous recessive refers to an organism that has two copies of the same recessive allele for a gene. In other words, both copies of the gene are identical and recessive, meaning that the dominant allele is not present to mask the expression of the recessive allele. Homozygous recessive organisms will express the recessive trait associated with that allele. For example, if an organism has two copies of the recessive allele for a gene that determines flower color, it will have the recessive flower color. In humans, people who have both a normal and a mutant allele for the CF gene are carriers for the mutant recessive CF allele. Homozygous recessive genotypes can lead to homozygous traits, such as blue eyes or red hair.
