Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. It is a viral infection that commonly causes skin or mucous membrane growths, known as warts. There are more than 100 varieties of HPV, and some types can cause health problems, including genital warts and cancers. HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the virus, even if they dont have signs or symptoms. Some HPV infections can lead to cancer, including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancer. Most people with HPV have no symptoms and feel totally fine, so they usually don’t even know they’re infected. However, some types of HPV can lead to genital warts or certain types of cancer. HPV infections can be prevented with vaccines that can stop the health problems from happening.
