The High Speed 2 (HS2) project is a planned high-speed railway line and network of passenger train services in Great Britain. It is Britains new high-speed rail line being built from London to the North-West, with HS2 trains linking the biggest cities in Scotland, Manchester, Birmingham, and London. The project is designed to help modernize the rail network, slash travel times, and help Britain catch up with other European nations that operate well-connected high-speed rail networks. The majority of the project is planned to be completed between 2029 and 2033. However, between November 2021 and October 2023, the project was progressively cut until only the London to Handsacre and Birmingham section remained. The project has both supporters and opponents. Supporters of HS2 believe that the additional capacity and reliability provided will accommodate passenger numbers rising to pre-COVID-19 levels while driving a further modal shift to rail. Opponents believe that the project is neither environmentally nor financially sustainable. The project is the largest infrastructure project in Europe and the most important economic and social regeneration project in decades. The project is already playing a part in leveling up with companies in every region and nation of the UK benefiting from HS2 supply chain contracts.
