Humanities is a field of study that focuses on the human experience, including the study of history, philosophy, religion, modern and ancient languages and literature, fine and performing arts, media, and cultural studies. Humanities courses are designed to enrich students knowledge of the world beyond their own life and to help them understand themselves, others, and the world. Humanities majors investigate humanity itself, applying critical methods to help them understand literature, art, and the past, as well as human morality, culture, and values. Humanities courses promote creativity, teaching students to think in complex, nuanced ways and set aside assumptions. Humanities courses can be broad, but a BA in Applied Humanities can provide students with a transdisciplinary education, combining professional skills in a focused area with the cognitive, creative, international, interpersonal, and intercultural intelligence taught in the humanities. Humanities courses can include the study of European imperialism/colonialism, visual art, cinema, philosophy, religion, and literature. Humanities courses can also explore modern literature, drama, art, film, poetry, and music, placing developments in the humanities into historical and philosophical contexts and illustrating the continuity of culture. At the completion of a humanities course, students will be able to become acquainted with the human tradition as expressed in its literature, philosophy, and the arts.
