A hydrocele is a type of swelling in the scrotum, the pouch of skin that holds the testicles. This swelling happens when fluid collects in the thin sac that surrounds a testicle. Hydroceles are more common in infants than adults, and they often go away on their own. However, in some cases, a hydrocele may not go away on its own and may require surgery.

To diagnose a hydrocele, a healthcare provider will perform a physical exam. During the exam, the provider may apply pressure to the groin area or ask the patient to cough to see how the swelling changes. They may also shine a light through the scrotum to highlight any abdominal fluid in the area. If a hydrocele is suspected, the provider may order imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, to confirm the diagnosis.

In babies, a hydrocele sometimes goes away on its own. But at any age, its important for a healthcare provider to check a hydrocele. Thats because it can be linked to a problem with the testicles. A hydrocele that doesnt go away on its own might need to be removed with surgery. Before the operation to remove a hydrocele, the patient receives medicine that keeps them from feeling pain. To remove the hydrocele, a surgeon makes a cut in the scrotum or lower stomach area. Sometimes, a hydrocele is found during surgery to repair an inguinal hernia. In this case, the surgeon might remove the hydrocele even if its causing no discomfort.
