Hyperemesis gravidarum is a medical condition characterized by severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It is different from morning sickness, which is mild nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Hyperemesis gravidarum can cause dehydration, weight loss, and electrolyte imbalances. The condition usually occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy and can last for weeks, months, or up until delivery. Some of the common symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum include severe and persistent nausea and vomiting, food aversions, weight loss of 5% or more of pre-pregnancy weight, dehydration, headaches, confusion, fainting, jaundice, extreme fatigue, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity, and secondary anxiety/depression. Women with hyperemesis gravidarum may require hospitalization if the condition is severe. The exact cause of hyperemesis gravidarum is unknown, but it may be related to pregnancy hormones. Women who are pregnant with twins or more, have migraines, or have a family history of the condition are more likely to develop hyperemesis gravidarum.
