Hypermetropia, also known as far-sightedness or long-sightedness, is a condition of the eyes where the image of a nearby object is formed behind the retina instead of focusing on the retina. This makes it difficult for a person to focus on nearby objects but they can clearly see distant objects. Hypermetropia is mainly caused due to certain structural defects in the retina, such as small-sized eyeball, non-circular lenses, flatter cornea than usual, defective blood vessels in the retina, and weakness in the ciliary muscle. Based on severity, hypermetropia is classified into low hypermetropia, moderate hypermetropia, and high hypermetropia. Based on the accommodative status, hypermetropia is classified into total hypermetropia, latent hyperopia, and manifest hyperopia. Hypermetropia can be treated by using a convex lens that helps in the formation of an image on the retina.
