An IATA number is a unique seven-digit code assigned to IATA-certified travel agencies that want to distribute air tickets and/or gain industry recognition. It is effectively an account number that identifies a travel agency or other airline ticketing entity within the IATA network. Obtaining a full IATA number requires adherence to a strict list of criteria. The IATA number is used in the distribution of funds to and from the airlines, and it is printed on all tickets issued by the office. When a ticket is issued on an IATA number, the funds due to the airline, the airports, and others in the process are allocated via the IATA number. Refunds or voiding of airline tickets also happen via the IATA number. The IATA number is administered by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is headquartered in Montreal, Canada.
