IDF can refer to two different things:
-
Intermediate Distribution Frame: An intermediate distribution frame (IDF) is a free-standing or wall-mounted rack for managing and interconnecting a telecommunications cable between end-user devices and the main distribution frame (MDF). It is often set up at a central office or on customer premises and helps cross-connect user cable media to individual user line circuits and serves as a distribution point for multipair cables from the combined distribution frame (CDF) to separate cables connecting to devices located in different areas of the building. IDF can contain circuit termination equipment from various auxiliary components in central office environments. In both LAN and WAN environments, IDFs can hold different types of devices, including backup systems, such as hard disk drives or redundant arrays of independent disks; connections, such as coaxial, category and fiber optic cables; and networking devices, such as hubs, switches, routers, etc.
-
Israel Defense Forces: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is the national military of the State of Israel. It was established in 1948, two short weeks after Israel declared its independence against Arab forces. The IDF consists of ground forces, much like the U.S. Army, and includes the air force, and navy. Its guiding principles have been shaped by the country’s need to defend itself from its numerically superior neighbors. The primary element of this doctrine is the belief that Israel cannot afford to lose a single war. IDF planners believe that this goal can be attained only through a defensive strategy that utilizes the rapid mobilization of overwhelming force to take the war to the enemy. Military service is compulsory for Jews and Druze, both men and women, and for Circassian men. Among the specialized infantry units within the IDF are the Nahal Brigade, the Kfir Brigade, the Combat Engineering Corps, and the Paratroopers. The commander of the IDF is the chief of general staff, a position subject to civilian oversight by the minister of defense.
