Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a condition in which an organ, usually the heart, is not getting enough blood and oxygen. It is also known as coronary heart disease (CHD) or coronary artery disease (CAD) . IHD is caused by narrowed heart arteries, which restrict the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle. This can lead to serious limitations in the ability to independently initiate, sustain, or complete activities of daily living.

Symptoms of IHD include chest pain or discomfort known as angina pectoris. In men, IHD most typically manifests as a heart attack, while in women it usually presents as angina pectoris.

Treatment for IHD may include lifestyle changes, medications, and medical procedures such as angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery. In some cases, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) may be necessary to regulate heart rhythm and prevent life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death.
