Ihram is a sacred state that Muslims must enter in order to perform the major or minor pilgrimage in Islam. It involves a specific set of rituals and procedures that help focus the mind and body on the spiritual journey ahead. The word "ihram" comes from the Arabic root word "haram," which means "forbidden". A pilgrim must enter into this state before crossing the pilgrimage boundary, known as Mīqāt, by performing certain cleansing rituals and wearing the correct dress. The dress code for men includes two sheets of unstitched white cloth, sandals or flip flops that do not cover the ankle or back of the foot, and no head covering. Womens Ihram clothing must conceal the whole body, leaving only the face and hands uncovered. During the period of sanctification, sexual activity, shaving, and cutting one’s nails are forbidden in accordance with the pilgrim’s special relationship to God during the Ihram. Ihram clothing removes all societal representations of wealth or social differences and ensures that both men and women renounce the temptations of vanity and the world.
