Immigration is a process that international travelers must go through before leaving the airport. It involves speaking with an immigration officer who checks whether the traveler has the right documents to be in the country, whether they’re legally allowed to be there, and whether they’re bringing anything illegal with them. The immigration process typically takes only a few minutes, but lines can get long if many international flights arrive around the same time. Upon arrival, travelers will go through the immigration and passport control area of the airport, where they will show their passport, visa, and other immigration documents. After clearing immigration, travelers will need to proceed through the customs area before being allowed to exit the airport. Customs is the authority in the respective country you enter that is responsible for controlling the flow of goods, including animals, transports, foods, personal effects, and hazardous items, into and out of a country.
