Today, October 14, 2023, the moon passed in front of the sun, causing a partial solar eclipse visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. This particular eclipse is an "annular solar eclipse," which occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun at a time when the moon is at or close to its farthest point from our planet. It does not completely obscure the face of the sun, unlike in a total solar eclipse. The eclipse began in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PDT and ended at sunset in the Atlantic Ocean.
