The Kaaba is a small cube-shaped building located at the center of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is considered by Muslims to be the most sacred spot on Earth. The Kaaba is covered with a sacred black silk cloth called Kiswah, and it is roughly 15 meters (50 feet) high and is about 10 by 14 meters (35 by 40 feet) at the base. The enclosed interior of the Kaaba has no windows but just a door embedded with silver engravings and covered with a silk curtain of gold. Muslims are not allowed to go inside the Kaaba, but there are a few things that are known to be inside, including:

  • The Black Stone: Located in the eastern corner of the Kaaba, the Black Stone of Mecca is surrounded by a ring of stone and held together by a heavy silver band. According to tradition, this stone was given to Adam on his expulsion from paradise in order to obtain forgiveness of his sins. Every Muslim who makes the pilgrimage is required to walk around the Kaaba seven times, during which he or she kisses and touches the Black Stone.

  • Marble box: There is a marble box located to the right of the door of the Kaaba, which is used to store oils and perfumes that are used to wash and clean the inside of the Kaaba.

  • Door of Tawbah: To the north of the Kaaba, there is a door called the “Door of Tawbah” which is made of selected wood and covered with engraved gold and silver. Although it is not the main door, it has stairs leading to the Kaaba’s roof.

  • Prophet Muhammad’s Prayer Place: When you enter the Kaaba, you will see a unique pattern resembling a sajdah (prayer rug) on the floor of the Kaaba. It was the place of prayer of the Prophet Muhammad when he entered the holy Kaaba when Makkah was conquered.

  • Al-Multazam: Al-Multazam is the designation for the area that is in the middle between the left side of the Kaaba door and Hajr Al-Aswad.

The walls of the Kaabas interior are made of colorful and emblazoned marble, and the interior is covered with a red silk curtain that has Quranic verses embroidered on it.
