Inspire is an FDA-approved implantable upper airway stimulation device that functions like a pacemaker and stabilizes a patients throat during sleep to prevent obstruction. It is an alternative to traditional CPAP devices and is designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Inspire consists of three components: a programmable neuro-stimulator located in a chest pocket, a pressure sensing lead that detects patients breathing, and a stimulator lead that delivers mild stimulation to the tongue nerve. The stimulator is controlled via the patient’s handheld remote control. Patients turn on the device before going to bed to gently stimulate the throat muscles while sleeping. Inspire is the only FDA-approved obstructive sleep apnea treatment that works inside the body to treat the root cause of sleep apnea with just the click of a button. Inspire is implanted during a same-day, outpatient procedure. The device opens the airway, allowing the patient to breathe normally and sleep peacefully. Inspire therapy is an implantable treatment option for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to use or get consistent benefit from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The device reduces sleep apnea by an average of 79% and significantly reduces snoring and daytime sleepiness.
