Inspire Sleep Apnea is an FDA-approved implantable upper airway stimulation device that treats obstructive sleep apnea. It is an alternative to traditional CPAP devices and works inside the body while the patient sleeps. The device consists of three components: a programmable neuro-stimulator located in a chest pocket, a pressure sensing lead that detects the patients breathing, and a stimulator lead that delivers mild stimulation to the tongue nerve. The stimulator is controlled via the patients handheld remote control. The device is implanted during a same-day, outpatient procedure. When the patient is ready for bed, they simply click the remote to turn Inspire on. While they sleep, Inspire opens their airway, allowing them to breathe normally and sleep peacefully. Inspire is a major commitment and is not for everyone. Patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea may be eligible for Inspire Sleep Therapy if they are unable to use or get consistent benefit from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The device reduces sleep apnea by an average of 79% and significantly reduces snoring and daytime sleepiness.
