Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of situations in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the typical definitions of male or female. There are many different ways someone can be intersex, including having genitals or internal sex organs that fall outside the male/female categories, having combinations of chromosomes that are different than XY (usually associated with male) and XX (usually associated with female), or having external genitals that fall into the typical male/female categories, but with internal organs or hormones that dont. Intersex people are born with these differences or develop them in childhood, and some intersex traits are noticed at birth while others don’t show up until puberty or later in life. Intersex is not a disorder, disease, or condition, and being intersex doesn’t mean a person needs any special treatments or care. However, some intersex people choose gender affirmation options if their gender doesn’t match the one they were assigned at birth.
