Intramurals are school-sponsored physical/recreational sports that take place beyond the students classroom time and are not contests against other external teams/groups. They are student-led competitions that provide fitness, relaxation, and entertainment in a casual but structured setting. Intramurals encourage school-wide involvement of all students in physical activity during non-instructional times that occur during the school day. Quality intramurals are student-focused, inclusive, fun events or activities that maximize physical activity participation for all students. Although friendly competition may be an element of an intramural program, it is not the main focus. Intramurals can be categorized by different types of activities, such as leagues, open gym, clubs, one-time activities or events, and novelty games or activities. They can be a one-day event or can take place daily, weekly, monthly, or throughout the year. Intramurals are a great way to increase student engagement by providing students with opportunities to interact socially with their peers, which fosters a sense of community. They also allow students to compete against their peers in a variety of activities, and the intramural program’s goal is to provide exciting, safe, and structured play activities that promote physical and mental health.
