Intrapersonal communication is communication with oneself or self-to-self communication. It is the process of creating, functioning, and evaluating symbolic processes that operate primarily within oneself. Intrapersonal communication can take many forms, including self-talk, inner dialogue, acts of imagination and visualization, and even recall and memory. It is involved in interpreting messages received from others and in formulating responses. Intrapersonal communication is not only an internal monologue but also involves efforts to plan, problem-solve, resolve internal conflict, and evaluate and judge oneself and others. Positive and negative feedback received from other people affects how a person talks to themselves. Although intrapersonal communication mostly occurs internally, it can be voiced out loud or via the written word. Some theorists hold that intrapersonal communication is the foundation of all communication, while others hold that it is an internalized version of interpersonal communication.
