An investment banker is an individual who works for a financial institution and is primarily concerned with raising capital for corporations, governments, or other entities. They are corporate financial advisors who help companies manage the process of raising financing for their activities. Investment bankers facilitate large, complicated financial transactions, such as structuring an acquisition, merger, or sale for clients. They also issue securities as a means of raising capital, which involves creating detailed documentation for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) necessary for a company to go public. Investment bankers may be involved in any of the following financial advisory activities for corporate clients: capital raising, book building, prospectus drafting, initial public offerings (IPOs), “roadshow” investment meetings, issuing and selling securities, private placement of capital, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate restructuring, debt and equity advisory services, bond issuance and pricing on bond markets. Investment bankers need many skills to be successful in the investment banking industry, including quantitative acumen and persuasive communication skills. They should also pay close attention to the legal regulations that govern their clients’ industries and have a vested interest in steering their clients towards decisions that are both profitable and ethically sound in the long run.
