In fantasy football, IR stands for Injured Reserve, which is a roster spot where a team can place a player who is unable to play due to injury. The IR spot is used to soften the impact of injuries on a fantasy team, and it allows the team to free up a roster spot while still holding onto the injured player. The eligibility of a player for the IR spot depends on the official injury/inactive list of the NFL. The system automatically places the IR tag on a player once the status report from the NFL is received. Only players with the IR or Out (O) tags are eligible for placement into an IR slot. The number of IR slots available in a league can be set by the league manager. When a player is placed in the IR slot, the team gains an open roster spot, and basic waiver claims and free agent pickups remain unchanged. However, if a team has a healthy player in the IR slot, they cannot add any new players to their roster. If a player on IR becomes healthy, the team must create room by dropping someone from their team before they can make any additional roster edits or free agent adds.
