The main religion in Israel is Judaism, with 73% of the population identifying as Jewish. Israel is the only country in the world with a Jewish-majority population. Other faiths in the country include Islam (predominantly Sunni), Christianity (mostly Melkite and Orthodox), and the religion of the Druze people. Almost all Israeli citizens are automatically registered as members of the states 14 official religious communities, which exercise control over several matters of personal status, especially marriage. Jewish identity in Israel is complex, spanning notions of religion, ethnicity, nationality, and family. When asked, “What is your present religion, if any?” virtually all Israeli Jews say they are Jewish – and almost none say they have no religion – even though roughly half describe themselves as secular and one-in-five do not believe in God. Jewish Israelis are mostly practitioners of traditional Judaism (55%), Liberal or Conservative (17%), Orthodox and Haredim (ultra-orthodox) (8%). 20% of Israeli Jews declare themselves non-religious.
