IV Roman numerals represent the number 4. The Roman numeral system is an additive (and subtractive) system in which letters are used to denote certain "base" numbers, and arbitrary numbers are then denoted using combinations of symbols. The numerical value of IV Roman numerals can be obtained by using any of the two methods given below:
- Method 1: In this method, we break the Roman numerals into single letters, write the numerical value of each letter, and add/subtract them. IV = V - I = 5 - 1 = 4.
- Method 2: In this method, we consider the groups of Roman numerals for addition or subtraction such as IV = 4.
It is worth noting that there are some cases where IIII is used instead of IV on the dial plates of clocks that use Roman numerals.
