Jamu is a traditional medicine from Indonesia that has been practiced for centuries to maintain good health and to treat ailments. It is predominantly a herbal medicine made from natural materials, such as roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves, and fruits. Materials acquired from animals, such as honey, royal jelly, milk, and native chicken eggs, are often used as well. Jamu is believed to have originated in the Mataram Kingdom era, around 1300 years ago.

Jamu is often distributed in the form of powder, pills, capsules, and drinking liquid. Jamu shops sell only ingredients or prepare the jamu on the spot as well. Recently, jamu juice has started to gain popularity in the United States. It is an herbal, turmeric-infused drink consumed daily in Indonesia for good health. Jamu juice is a blend of fresh turmeric, ginger, lemon, water, and honey. It is an all-natural, anti-inflammatory tonic that boasts tons of health and beauty benefits.

Jamu is an integral part of Indonesian culture, and in 2019, it was officially recognized as one of Indonesias intangible cultural heritage by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. Each family may have their own version of the drink, which can be bitter because of the root vegetables within it. A 2012 survey by the Indonesian Ministry of Health recorded a staggering 15,773 different jamu recipes within the archipelago. Jamu is seen as more of a preventative measure than a cure, and the health-giving drink is believed to have different properties, whether to ease period pain or lower blood pressure.
