Jihad is a struggle or fight against the enemies of Islam, as perceived by Islamists. On October 13, 2023, former Hamas leader and founding member Khalid Mashal called for global jihad and a show of anger and protests across the Muslim world in support of the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict with Israel. He asked Muslims worldwide to apply Jihad “on the ground rather than just in theory” and called the day the “Friday of Al-Aqsa flood” . Mashal specifically called on citizens and government agencies of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt to join the fight. Some commentators on social media have interpreted this to mean a day of possible terrorism.
