The former Hamas leaders call for demonstrations is not a peaceful one, and there are concerns about the potential for violence. The conflict between Israel and Hamas is already a major concern for the West, and there are worries about jihadist groups in Syria, Iran-backed Shia militia groups in Iraq, and other jihadist groups. In preparation for potential protests, New York City police have been ordered to show up in uniform and be ready to deploy, and Columbia University has closed its campus to the public.
