Kahlúa is a coffee liqueur that is made in Veracruz, Mexico, and was first invented in 1936 by Pedro Domecq. It is made with 100% Arabica coffee beans, rum, sugar, and vanilla bean. The rum used in Kahlúa is made from sugarcane, from which the juice is extracted, boiled, and mixed with water. Once the alcohol is obtained, it undergoes the distillation process. Kahlúa is distilled to perfection, and the resulting liqueur is dark brown in color and not creamy at all, although many popular drinks that use it add cream. Kahlúa contains about 20% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is relatively low in alcohol. It is a key ingredient in several notable cocktails, including the White Russian, Black Russian, Espresso Martini, and Mudslide. Homemade Kahlúa can be made by combining arabica coffee with sugar, vanilla, and rum.
