KMT stands for Kinetic Molecular Theory, which is a model that describes the behavior of gaseous substances. The theory is based on the following five postulates:

  • The particles in a gas are in constant, random motion.
  • The combined volume of the particles is negligible.
  • The particles exert no forces on one another.
  • Any collisions between the particles are completely elastic.
  • The average kinetic energy of the particles is proportional to the temperature in kelvins.

The KMT is used to explain the macroscopic activity and attributes of gaseous substances using the microscopic constituents of gaseous elements. The theory explains the different macroscopic features of gas through considerations of the microscopic nature of such atoms as well as molecules that make up the gas. The KMT is used to derive various gas laws, including Boyle’s, Charles’s, Amontons’s, Avogadro’s, and Dalton’s laws.
