A long-distance relationship (LDR) is an intimate relationship between partners who are geographically separated from one another. Partners in LDRs face geographic separation and lack of face-to-face contact, which can present unique challenges. LDRs are particularly prevalent among college students, constituting 25% to 50% of all relationships. Characteristics of LDRs include increased financial burdens to maintain relationships, difficulty maintaining geographically close friendships while in long-distance romantic relationships, and unexpected and controlled communication in military LDRs. However, LDRs can also have benefits, such as more talking and learning about each other, since partners spend more time having conversations than they might if they were sitting side-by-side watching Netflix or doing activities together. To make an LDR work, communication is key, and there must be some possibility that the two people involved will one day be together.
