Lockdown Mode is a security feature available on Apple devices that severely restricts the functionality of the device to protect against highly targeted cyber attacks. It is an optional feature designed for individuals who may be personally targeted by sophisticated digital threats, such as politicians, activists, journalists, or lawyers dealing with sensitive information that cannot be publicly exposed. When Lockdown Mode is enabled, certain apps, websites, and features are strictly limited or disabled to reduce the attack surface that could be exploited by highly targeted mercenary spyware. Some experiences might not be available at all. Lockdown Mode is available on iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, watchOS 10 or later, and macOS Ventura or later.

Lockdown Mode protects the device by limiting or disabling certain apps and features, including configuration profiles, which cant be installed, and the device cant be enrolled in Mobile Device Management or device supervision while in Lockdown Mode. Phone calls and plain text messages continue to work while Lockdown Mode is enabled, and emergency features such as SOS emergency calls are not affected. Lockdown Mode limits or disables key features on the device when you believe youre being directly targeted by malware, spyware, or other threats.

To enable Lockdown Mode, go to System Settings and select Privacy & Security. Scroll down the screen and click the Turn On button next to Lockdown Mode. Confirm the action with your password or Touch ID, then click the Turn On & Restart button. It is important to note that Lockdown Mode is not a cure-all solution to keep you safe online, and it is not recommended for ordinary users as it may cause more inconvenience than actual good.
