LOG footage is a type of video format that is designed to produce very flat footage, giving the best options for color grading. LOG stands for logarithmic, and it is a compressed video format that retains more color information than other footage types. When a camera operator shoots in LOG, the image appears flat and desaturated, but it captures more dynamic range and details. LOG footage has to be manipulated in post-production to look normal, and it is easier to color grade because it contains so much additional information than standard video. Shooting in LOG has a slight disadvantage in the sense that it is still a compressed video format, and certain elements will be baked in. However, it is still really flat footage with tons of information, and it gives more flexibility when color correcting and grading the footage. Most modern cameras have the option to shoot in LOG, and there are LUTs available online for virtually every type of LOG.
