A lower berth in a train is a type of sleeping accommodation that is located on the lower level of a bunk bed-style area in the sleeper car. It is the most comfortable berth for every walk of people. The lower berth is longer than the upper berth and spans the length of a window, so passengers can enjoy a window seat. It is also equipped with an extra table where passengers can keep their laptop or use it as a dining table. The lower berth is especially beneficial for those who have a tendency of getting down at every station or using the loo every now and then. In Indian Railways, there is a quota for lower berths for male passengers of age 60 years and above and female passengers of age 45 years and above who can avail the facility to get confirmed lower berth in trains. However, more than two tickets cannot be booked at a time in this quota, even if all the passengers are severally and jointly eligible for the same.
