Luxor is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt that includes the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. The name Luxor derives from the Arabic qasr (قصر), meaning "castle" or "palace". It was known as "The city of Hundred Doors" during ancient times. Luxor is considered by many to be the globes greatest open-air museum, as it holds some of the most majestic temples such as the Valley of the Kings, the Karnak temple, Queen Hatshepsut temple, and Luxor temple that holds some of the most extraordinary monuments and artifacts. Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom, and the city of Amun, later to become the god Amun-Ra. The city was regarded in the ancient Egyptian texts as wAs.t. Luxor is located in the south of Upper Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile River and part of the ancient city of Thebes. It is an important tourism center nowadays. Some of the things to see in Luxor include the Luxor Temple, the Karnak Temple Complex, the necropolises of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and the massive stone statues known as the Colossi of Menmon.
