Luxor is an ancient city located in Upper Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile River, and part of the ancient city of Thebes. It was the capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom and the city of Amun, later to become the god Amun-Ra. The name Luxor derives from the Arabic qasr, meaning "castle" or "palace". Luxor is considered by many to be the globes greatest open-air museum, as it holds some of the most majestic temples such as the Valley of the Kings, the Karnak temple, Queen Hatshepsut temple, and Luxor temple that holds some of the most extraordinary monuments and artifacts. Luxor is known for its ancient ruins and artifacts, and it is a hub of wealth, rising in prominence, not just in Egypt but worldwide. The Luxor Pass is a single ticket that includes all of the archaeological sites on the West Bank and East Bank of Luxor. Visitors can get around Luxor by taxi or by hiring a guide and driver. Luxor has a number of churches and mosques, and it is a market town for the surrounding agricultural district.
