M.2 is a form factor for solid-state drives (SSDs) that is shaped like a stick of gum. M.2 cards were initially deployed in tablet and laptop computers but later migrated to desktops. Modern motherboards include M.2 sockets, and adapters retrofit old computers. M.2 supports multiple protocols and applications such as Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) and SATA. M.2-compatible products are not limited to solid-state drives either. The specification also supports protocols such as Universal Serial Buses (USBs) and Wi-Fi and can be used in graphics cards and artificial intelligence accelerator cards that use the M.2 specification. M.2 cards can hold a solid-state drive (SSD) or communications controller such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. M.2 SSDs conform to a computer industry standard and are not limited to solid-state drives. M.2 SSDs can be SATA-based, PCIe-based with NVMe support, or PCIe-based without NVMe support. An M.2 SSD with NVMe support offers up to five times more bandwidth than SATA M.2 models, bringing better performance in key tasks, such as file transfers, video or photo editing, transcoding, compression and decompression. M.2 SSDs are generally faster but more expensive than traditional, 2.5-inch SSDs. Thin gaming laptops are increasingly using M.2 SSDs because they take up less room than 2.5-inch SSDs or hard drives. M.2 SSDs go up to 2TB in storage size. To use an M.2 SSD in a computer, the motherboard must have M.2 slots. Some motherboards have two or more M.2 slots, allowing users to run their SSDs in RAID.
