The cannabis plant has been used for both medicinal and recreational purposes for millennia. The plant contains more than 100 different chemicals called cannabinoids, each of which has a different effect on the body. The main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, responsible for most of the intoxicating effects that people seek, is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) . Here are some of the uses of marijuana plants:

  • Recreational use: Marijuana is commonly used as a recreational drug. People smoke it in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints, in pipes, water pipes, or in blunts. It can also be used to brew tea and is frequently mixed into foods such as brownies, cookies, or candies. Vaporizers are also increasingly used to consume marijuana. Stronger forms of marijuana include sinsemilla and concentrated resins containing high doses of marijuana’s active ingredients, including honeylike hash oil, waxy budder, and hard amberlike shatter.

  • Medicinal use: Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases or conditions. It is basically the same product as recreational marijuana, but its taken for medical purposes. Researchers are studying whether medical marijuana can help treat a number of conditions including chronic pain, nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, spasticity from multiple sclerosis, and appetite loss. Cannabis-based products come from the dried flowering tops, leaves, stems, and seeds of the Cannabis sativa (hemp) plant. Ways of using it include smoking or vaping it, brewing it as a tea, consuming it in the form of edibles, such as brownies or candies, eating it raw, applying it as a topical treatment, and taking it as capsules or supplements.

  • Industrial use: Cannabis has been used as hemp fiber to create paper, clothing, biofuel, and food.

In summary, marijuana plants are used for recreational, medicinal, and industrial purposes.
