A person who constructs masonry is called a mason or bricklayer. Masonry is one of the oldest building crafts in the world, and the construction of Egyptian pyramids, Roman aqueducts, and medieval cathedrals are all examples of masonry.

Masonry has both structural and non-structural applications. Structural applications include walls, columns, beams, foundations, load-bearing arches, and others. On the other hand, masonry is also used in non-structural applications such as fireplaces, chimneys, and veneer systems.

There are different types of masonry work, including brick masonry, stone masonry, hollow block concrete masonry, reinforced masonry, and composite masonry. Each type of masonry work requires intricate knowledge of what each function requires, and further involves an investment of time and practice to create superior resulting products.

Masonry work is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting and long periods of standing, kneeling, and bending. Masons typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and learn the trade either through an apprenticeship or on the job. The median annual wage for masonry workers was $49,490 in May 2022.
