Mastopexy, also known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure performed on women who have sagging breasts due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, or genetics. During the procedure, a plastic surgeon removes excess skin and reshapes breast tissue to raise the breasts and create a more youthful breast contour. The surgery can also improve asymmetry and other imperfections. Cuts (incisions) can be made around the darker areas surrounding the nipples (areolae), downward to the breast creases, and horizontally along the creases. The procedure usually lasts an hour or two, depending on how much work is being done, and most breast lifts take place in a surgical center or hospital. After the surgery, patients may experience some pain and swelling, and they should avoid certain medications and activities as directed by their surgeon. Breast lift scars depend on the type of incision used, but they are usually hidden in the borders of the areolas, breast crease, and natural contours of the breasts. The scars are permanent but fade over time.
