Maxitrol Eye Drops is a sterile eye drop that contains the active ingredients dexamethasone, neomycin, and polymyxin B. It is used to treat inflammation and bacterial infections in the external part of the eye. The medication is a combination of antibiotics and corticosteroids that work by stopping the growth of bacteria and reducing swelling. Maxitrol Eye Drops are used to treat conditions involving swelling (inflammation) of the eyes and to treat or prevent bacterial eye infections. It is important to note that Maxitrol Eye Drops treat/prevent only bacterial eye infections and will not work for other types of eye infections and may worsen them (such as infections caused by viruses, fungi, mycobacteria). The medication should not be used if the safety seal around the closure and neck area is broken, the bottle/packaging shows signs of tampering, or the expiry date on the bottle/carton has passed. Contact lens wear is not recommended during treatment of an eye infection, and the preservative in Maxitrol Eye Drops, benzalkonium chloride, may cause eye irritation and is known to discolor contact lenses. If you are not sure whether you should start using Maxitrol Eye Drops, talk to your doctor.
