MDTA stands for Maryland Transportation Authority, which is an independent state agency responsible for financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining eight transportation facilities, including two toll roads, two tunnels, and four bridges in Maryland. The MDTA has been responsible for constructing, managing, operating, and improving the States toll facilities since 1971. MDTA facilities are fully financed, operated, maintained, improved, and protected with toll revenues paid by customers using those facilities. The MDTA is self-sufficient and receives no gas tax, motor vehicle fees, or other revenue in the Transportation Trust Fund. The ICC/MD 200 is Marylands first all-electronic, variably priced toll road, and all eight MDTA facilities are all electronic (cashless) .
