MEA weekend is a break during the school year in Minnesota that takes place on the third Thursday and Friday of October. During this time, most schools across the state observe a four-day break from class. The weekend is named for the Minnesota Education Association (MEA) conferences, which are held during this time and offer teachers professional development opportunities at the start of the school year. Students do not have classes during MEA weekend, enabling educators in Minnesota to attend the conference. The MEA conference dates back to 1861 and is hosted by Education Minnesota, the states teachers union. While MEA weekend is a much-needed break for students and their families, it is also one of the busiest travel times in Minnesota.
