Senator Robert Menendez, his wife Nadine Menendez, and three New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes, were charged with participating in a years-long bribery scheme. Menendez is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit bribery, one count of conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. The charges against Menendez and his wife were updated with a new charge that he conspired to act as an agent of the Egyptian government. The new charge alleges that from 2018 to 2022, Hana, Menendez, and his wife "conspired, confederated and agreed together and with each other to provide sensitive U.S. Government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt". The new charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
