The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is an Indian social welfare measure that aims to guarantee the right to work. It was passed on August 23, 2005, and implemented in February 2006 under the UPA government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The MGNREGA provides a legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to adult members of a rural household who demand employment and are willing to do unskilled manual work. The scheme aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
