Microsoft Teams Free (classic) is a legacy free Teams app for business that was retired by Microsoft on April 12, 2023. Microsoft made this change to invest in a single free Teams experience across personal and small business. After this date, users could no longer access their data, including data for existing channels, chats, and recurring meetings, and had to upgrade to a paid subscription to continue using Teams. Microsoft Teams (free) is a new free version of Teams that is available to access today. Users can switch to this new version, but data will not transfer to the new version. The account used to sign in to the legacy Microsoft Teams Free (classic) app can be used to sign in to the new Microsoft Teams (free) app. However, these are two separate tenants, and will not share any data. The new free version of Microsoft Teams (free) comes with a lighter, pared-down version of the Teams experience, and users can still host meetings and chats on the new free plan, but they won’t have access to many of the advanced features offered to premium users.
