Midrange in music refers to the frequency range between 250 Hz and 4,000 Hz. This is the range where the majority of audio content is in most music, movies, and TV shows. The midrange determines how prominent an instrument is in the mix, and it contains the main body of the music, including vocals and most instruments. Boosting around 1,000 Hz in the midrange can give instruments a horn-like quality, but excess output at this range can sound tinny and may cause ear fatigue. Reproduction of the midrange frequencies should sound natural and uncolored with excellent detail while avoiding being too forward or recessed or sounding excessively bright or dull. If a speaker’s midrange output isn’t clear, spoken dialogue and musical vocals will be unnatural or rendered inaudible, so its of critical importance to nearly every piece of music and home theater audio content.
