Milieu refers to the physical or social setting in which something occurs or develops, or the people, physical, and social conditions and events that provide the environment in which someone acts or lives. It can also refer to the surrounding culture, including a persons family, house, neighborhood, school, and people they hang out with. Milieu is often used to refer to social environments that are remote to the speaker and her presumed readers, such as the social worlds of artists and the wealthy, or social worlds of bygone eras. Milieu therapy is a safe, structured, group treatment method for mental health issues that involves using everyday activities and a conditioned environment to help people with interaction in community settings.
