Mobility allowance is a social security benefit that helps people with disabilities or illnesses to cover the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability. It is not means-tested, or affected by earnings or savings. The mobility allowance is paid to people who are unable to walk, or have difficulty in walking. The allowance is available in different countries, such as Ireland, Australia, and the UK. In the UK, the mobility allowance is part of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and is made up of a care component and a mobility component. The mobility component is only available for new claims from children under 16, and it has been abolished for all new claims from people aged between 16 and state pension age. The mobility component of DLA is paid at two different rates, depending on the severity of the walking difficulties. The rates for the mobility component of DLA in 2023/24 are:

  • Low rate mobility: £26.90
  • High rate mobility: £71.00

The mobility allowance is also available for service personnel and veterans who have been seriously injured in service on or after 6 April 2005. In Australia, the mobility allowance is a payment to help with travel costs for work, study, or looking for work if you have a disability, illness, or injury that means you cant use public transport without substantial difficulty.
