The Motability Scheme is a program that allows people with disabilities to lease a new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter, or powered wheelchair using their mobility allowance. The scheme is run by Motability Operations Ltd, an independent company responsible for the finance, administration, and maintenance of the program. The Motability Scheme works by exchanging the qualifying mobility allowance for a brand-new vehicle, and the payments are received straight from the allowance provider to make paying simple. The scheme offers an affordable way for disabled people to lease a vehicle and achieve greater independence. To be eligible for the scheme, one must have at least 12 months left before their benefit ends and must have been awarded the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.
