In the Harry Potter series, a Muggle is a person who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born in a magical family. Muggles can also be described as people who do not have any magical blood inside them. The term Muggle is sometimes used in a pejorative manner in the novels. Witches and wizards with non-magical parents are called Muggle-borns. Some Muggles are aware of the wizarding world, including Muggle parents of magical children, the Muggle Prime Minister, the Dursley family, and the non-magical spouses of some witches and wizards. The word "Muggle" was created by J.K. Rowling from "mug", an English term for someone who is easily fooled. In the British wizarding world, the term "Muggle" was widely used to refer to a non-magical person. Some might consider it derogatory, but it was in fact often used in official contexts, such as the Department of Misuse of Muggle Artifacts and Muggle Studies at Hogwarts. The term "Muggle" is not intended to be negative, but since it points out that someone lacks something, it can be used derogatorily. However, it is not considered a derogatory term in general.
